Notice in a Staffordshire paper - "SHOCKING DISCOVERY AT NORMACOT.
On Tuesday afternoon a gentleman named Mr. William Penny, about 56 years of age, an artist by profession, was found dead in bed under sad and singular circumstances. Some few months ago the deceased gentleman arrived in Longton for the purpose of painting the portraits of several gentlemen in the district, one being the portrait of the Mayor, Mr. Aynsley. He at first took apartments in a Temperance Hotel, but afterwards rented a cottage house, No. 18, Meir-road, Normacot, which he furnished. Here he lived in the most retired manner until the date of his death. The deceased gentleman was stout in appearance, and dressed in a semi-clerical style. He was undoubtedly not only an artist of merit, but a man of superior education and ability, and was a master of several languages. His home in Birmingham was left in charge of his wife and family, numbering about nine or ten. He was last seen alive by the neighbors on Saturday morning, when he said he wanted to be quiet, as he had some particular work to do. He retired to his home and was never seen again alive. On Tuesday his family in Birmingham, not hearing from him as usual, telegraphed to Mr. Myatt, Market-terrace, Longton, for information respecting him. On receipt of this message Mr. Myatt at once dispatched his assistant Mr. Parry, to Normacot to make inquiries and report. Mr. Parry proceeded to the house and obtaining no response to his knocks, made inquiries in the neighborhood, and gathered that Mr. Penny had left the place at the weekend. Not satisfied that this was so, Mr. Parry went to the house again, and noticed the key was in the lock in the inside of the door. He became alarmed, obtained a ladder and mounted to the bedroom. He saw the deceased lying in bed. Sergeant Leese was promptly sent for, and an entrance was forced through the window. The deceased was lying on his left side. His hand was supporting his head. Death must have taken place a day or two ago for decomposition had already commenced. On the arrival of a daughter of the deceased from Birmingham, it was ascertained that deceased had for some time been troubled with heart disease. It is thought that after retiring on Saturday or Sunday night he was seized with an attack and died while unconscious. In the house were found several portraits in various stages of progression, including the Mayor's (Jr. J. Aynsley), Mr. F.R. Myatt, and others. On the floor of the front room were several letters from Mrs. Penny, which had evidently been pushed under the door by the postman. In deceased's bedroom was also found a partly written letter to his wife, dated Wednesday, 21st. The contents, however, throw no light upon the death, being taken up with private matters connected with the family in Birmingham. The sad affair has caused quite a sensation in the neighborhood. Deceased was but little know owing to his retiring habits. An inquest will be held."

William's death was registered in Stone, Staffordshire - 4th quarter of 1887 - Reg. #6b 27
